Kolkata's Re-Inventive Nightlife
Like many Indian cities, Kolkata - formerly known as Calcutta - is a metropolis in the process of reinventing itself. Once considered India's intellectual center, and birthplace of the British East India Company, Kolkata is an historic city with rich bohemian, revolutionary and commercial roots.
The saying goes that Kolkata had restaurants before the rest of Indian heard of “eating out,” and “the city of Joy” continues to nourish a superlative culinary tradition. And while the jazz clubs of the colonial British Raj-era are now mostly gone, modern-day Kolkata is re-establishing a distinctive nightlife scene.
When planning your Kolkata agenda, remember that Thursday's are dry in the city. Alcohol, however, can still be procured on Thursdays at major hotels like The Broadway; it's one of the few places in Kolkata that serves beer with a plate of sliced cucumbers on dry days.
The time to visit Kolkata is now; the independently-minded metropolis is experiencing a mini-renaissance and young denizens are carving out a modern, cosmopolitan style amidst the majesty of the city's gloried, unique, artistically-minded past.
